I agree with you!!!

the point is preparation, in my case (maybe i was lucky) reach was not the main focus (pun intended) but speed was. frankly I didnt feel I lost shots due to lack of reach, whereas most of my shots had very little light available and i got a pile of blurry shots taken wide open or very close.

I'm just saying that it is worth checking with the rangers as to what to expect. obviously if you're not allowed to quit the roads, you will always need reach unless you get lucky, but again, imho, if you are allowed to quit the roads and pursue the animals in the bush... maybe there's also speed to take into consideration.

anyhow, for all you amateurs out there, please DO TRY to arrange a safari, it's a magnificent experience on many levels and do bring all the equipment you can.
