blown highlights w/50 1.8d

Hi to all,

So yesterday was a beautiful day here in NY and had the chance of using my D700 w/50 1.8D, but had a difficult time with the exposure...

I used the flash all the time for "fill flash" purposes, with Aperture exposure, shutter 1/250, f/4, sensing: one-chip color area, metering: spot, ISO: 200, but this is the result. Flash set at -2.0.
Picture was taken under large awning placed on deck.

I have an iApple and Aperture but haven't had the time to master it yet. What would you recommend?

(I also took some pictures taken on bright light but they were to bright to even post....)
