European Laws Regarding Street Photography?

I would like to engage more in street photography, with people as more central subjects. Right now, I live in Germany and have a bit of angst about doing such a thing, not knowing the laws and sometimes being told by people I know that it's not considered "normal", though I have done a bit of it anyhow.

What are the laws throughout Europe, regarding street shooting? I travel all over and want to get an idea where it's either illegal, not customary, legal, but not tolerated, etc.
