Re: Picture control vs. exposure
In reply to eNo, May 25, 2011

Now I have exposed down the photo and adjusted the exposure to not clip the Picture Control skintones. Still think the original non Picture Control is mush better. And it's not possible to adjust the curve to make the Picture Control picture look anything like the Non Picture Control picture. The color tones in the skin area is TOTALLY different.

For these samples you posted, the relationship between the exposure and the tone curve needs to be assessed. I will speak only to the Portrait control, since I don't think the others matter for portraits. Portrait has a brighter curve in the highlights, obviously brighter than whatever the default curve was for your D70. So your exposure, which is clipping (I'm eyeballing here, but for this particular exposure, the skin tones are over-exposed/over-flashed IMO) in the highlights is "toned down" by the D70's native tone curve and blown by the Portrait control. (Not surprising: Nikon used to design tone curves tailored for particular sensor capabilities/limitations). I see some difference between your Picture Control sample with reduced brightness and the D70's native tone curve, but not what I would call "appreciable." Now, I realize you have a different opinion and preference, so...

The good news is that if you don't like any of these tone curves as well as your D70's native curve, you can design your own in Picture Control Utility (comes free with ViewNX2). Simply select this very photo, open Picture Control Utility, select the Neutral control as your starting point, and create a new custom control where you vary the tone curve (along with Hue if necessary) to get the result you want. You won't get 100% of what you want, but you might get close enough to be satisfied. You can then load the result into your camera and/or use it in ViewNX2 for post-processing.

This is how I designed the two simulated D2XMODE1 custom controls I discusss here:
