Are you using the same lens? In addition to using the same Picture Control and WB settings, lens color rendition does play a role. Do you still have those cameras to compare with side-by-side shots, using the same lens, capturing the same composition and under the same lighting? Otherwise I fear you are just going by "impressions" rather than tangible results that truly reveal a difference.

Yes the same lenses. Unfortunately I can't compare. I will this summer though. But I can't set the same Picture Control.

Sure you can. With the free and downloadable ViewNX2.

D70 didn't utilize the new Picture Control system. It utilized the Mode 1a instead. But if you load a D70 shot in Capture NX you can use the new Picture Control on the old RAW-photos. If I do that the skin tones looks as bad as the D7000 does.

Ah, so it may not be the camera? Hint-hint. What Picture Control did you try? Portrait is much better for skin tones, in my experience. Check out also the D2XMODE simulated custom control I generated ( ).

So it might be the new Picture Control system that ruins the skin tones...

Or it may be that you got used to erroneous skin tones and came to prefer them over more accurate ones. Consider that honestly before you pull out too much hair. I had to come to the same conclusion when I wasn't happy with D90 colors when compared to the D80 -- it turned out the D90 was actually more accurate, and that if I wanted the "pleasant" D80 colors, I had to do some tweaking in-camera or preferably, in PP. Also, I recommend you carefully/systematically control for WB in your comparisons, as in stick a gray card in your frame then use the WB gray-reference eye-dropper option in NX to balance the color on a per-camera basis (gray card reference for each camera, IOW).
