Playing devil's advocate, if, in fact, that Sigma's profit comes from selling lenses, of which I don't doubt, then it totally makes sense that they feel justified selling the SD1 for $9,700.

Assuming Sigma knew full well that they were going to be letting down a significant number of enthusiasts with the announce pricing, the biggest fumble was to not have an answer for them in terms of an product or roadmap for their next midrange DSLR replacement.
