camera for beginner

I am new to photography and am looking for an upgrade on my point and shoot camera. It will be primarily for outdoor use, nature and landscapes. I am considering a used digital SLR or Compact System camera to save money. I would like to spend under $500. Any suggestions on a used model that will suit my needs?
