SB400 vs. 18-55 for D90 & Indoor photos
May 21, 2011

I'd like confirmation that I'm spending my money in the right place.

I have a D90 with 18-105 and a Nissin Di822 flash unit, similar to an SB600.

If I'm going to a birthday party or other casual occasion, I like to take just the camera with a lens mounted, and sheathed in a LensCoat BodyBag. When find myself doing indoor casual shooting with the 18-105, however, the lens isn't fast enough, and the 18-105 blocks the built-in flash.

For about $120, I can get either an SB400 or an 18-55 that won't block the built-in flash.

I don't think I'll mind pocketing the SB400, so I think that's the way to go. I also think that it's a more flexible option, for example if I pick up a 17-5x f/2.8 lens.

My only hesitation is that I can't see myself owning both items ($120 isn't so much money, but it's still money). So can anyone think of a reason to get the 18-55 instead of the SB400?

Thanks in advance.
