Japan is going to be recovering for DECADES not a year fer gawds sakes. Biggest nuclear meltdown(s) ever and serious damage in terms of lost souls but devastated manufacturing and transportation infrastructures...this does not get better in a year...

But if this price is not a gaff then Sigma's SD series is deader than last year unless the SD1 turns out to be a true beast. But there is no way Sigma was marketing this thing in this price category.

There has to be more to the story if this price is real. If this is real why would Sigma be dropping the price of the SD15...some unannounced intermediate version?

Quite possible...The fashion industry does it all the time. They want to sell a dress for 2000 bucks, but they know that $2000 sounds like a lot on of money to most potential buyers. So they make another very similar dress, that they dont expect to sell, and stick a $10000 pricetag on it...Now the $2000 dress seems like a bargain in comparison and it sells like hotcakes!

Problem is, how could Sigma make a bargain basement version of the SD1 that is'nt so compromised in features and specs that its still sellable?

And what features could they leave out of the SD1, there aren't any, no live view, no tethered shooting, no video. Low res screen compaired to the Nikons and Canons They haven't got anything to leave out

Sticking the old SD14/15 sensor in the existing SD1 body may be an option but nobody would go for that when the SD15 is bound to be much cheaper.

Can't see the point in that either as the only real advantage with the SD1 body is the weather sealing.

No...This is too far fetched, I think they have simply gone stark staring mad instead!
