Tripod for photo and video

I'm in the market for a new tripod, but I'm somewhat boggled by the different choices available.

I'm hoping that I can find something that's suitable for both photographic and video work. I understand that there may be compromises involved in finding a single head suitable for both tasks, but I don't know enough about the subject to say whether those compromises will be acceptable to me.

I don't think I'm going to need anything too advanced at my modest level of skill, but I don't have a definite budget, and I'm willing to shell out more if there are definite advantages to doing so.

Can anyone offer any advice, or perhaps point me towards a good site that explains the issues in choosing a tripod?
