So my question is: What is the point of spending over 2 grand for a 70-200 f2.8 lens when the vibration control available in todays lenses allow you to gain 2-3 stops in shutter speed, thereby allowing the use of 'slower' lenses with an f stop range of f3.5-5.6.

Try shooting action/sports with a slow consumer zoom and you will have your answer.

Thanks! Marvin

I would be shooting church ceremonies. Not much movement.

In that case, flash (if allowed) would be your best friend.
I was able to get some acceptable shots in a church with my 18-200 VR, though.
