Today I tested the capabilities of my 550d + 18-55 kit lens trying to shot the bees on flowers. what a challenge! Always on move and with a difficult focusing. After some shot I switched to manual focus, full closing the focus, and moving the camera to keep the subject in focus (sorry for my english...). This way it's a bit easier, but you have to be fast and of course shot many pictures to find some to keep...

My question is about the depth of field: I shot at 55mm at f5.6 and the results are fine many times, but a little error in focusing or if the subject is not properly posed the results is lost. How would you be able to take better shot with a prime (macro or not)? Wouldn't it have a too little dof?
