70-300 IS USM at 300

I used to have Canon 70-300 IS USM, sold it recently. It had amazing sharp and contrast70-200mm while 300mm was quite disappointing as one could expect. But the real problem was it could not autofocus properly at 300- probably due to the lack of contrast and out-of-date micro USM. As result, an awful lot of 300mm shots went to recycle bin - not only were they slightly blurry because of 300mm, but they simply were OOF (sunny day, shutter speed 1/500 or less).

Did anyone experience such a problem with this lens? Is it my lens only?

Need to figure out that, because I realized I cant live without 300mm and am going to buy another 70-300 in near future (most likely Tamron).

Thanks
