Request Basic Aperture Help! from first time user

I'm a newbie and first time aperture user, so I appreciate your help & patience. Downloaded aperture 3 trial; seems to be working and I'm enjoying the features, but running very slow.

thinking I have duplication, I tried to consolidate master libraries per apple web site instructions but unable to no reference files found.
any ideas to get me running normally?
