I wasn't one of those with that advise, but I agree with it in the context of not interfering with the official photographer especially during the posed shots. I'm not saying don't bring a camera - I bring mine to weddings where I'm not the official photog too, but do make sure to respect the authority and needs of the guy/gal who's getting paid to take photos.

I've seen "busy bodies" with cameras distracting the subjects being photographed, resulting in their not being attentive to the "official" photographer. I think it's safe to say that we all want the bride and groom to get the best shots possible and, barring some weird circumstance such as gross incompetence or failed/incapable equipment, that should be the professional photos they've paid for.
