Compact superzoom TZ Clone v Large sensor compact
May 3, 2011

I'm thinking about replacing my TZ3.

I'd like much better low light performance, without losing too much zoom and keeping size no bigger than TZ3 (or not much bigger).

The Canon S95 is attractive because of the large sensor and there are good reports of image quality. However, a 28~105mm lens just doesn't compete against 28~280mm. [I found 105mm inadequate on an earlier Olympus camera].

Nothing seems to occupy the middle ground. Ideally, Canon would put maybe a 28~200 lens on the S95, with a modest growth in size & the result would be a lovely compromise, perhaps not much bigger than a TZ20?.

Instead, it seems the consumer has to choose between all the Panazonic compact superzoom TZ clones and a few high quality compacts with only 3x zoom (S96, XZ1 etc).

Where do I go for my compromise solution? Chasing 16x zoom doesn't interest me.
Maybe 7x zoom and a good sensor would be better, whilst keeping a compact size.
