D3 is great for still life photography
May 1, 2011

During the past 2 months I photographed a new collection of still life work with my Nikon D3. I shot everything RAW and processed the files with Photoshop. I used the following Nikon lenses: 60 2.8 Macro, 105 4.0 Macro Ai, 24-70 2.8, and 15mm 5.6. For lighting I used Dynalite strobes, Bardwell McAllister 500 Spot, and a 1,000 focusable spotlight with inserts. The photos can be seen at http://www.danwagnerphotography.com

I've printed the still lifes to 11x17 with my Epson 3880 printer and the sharpness, color, black & white, etc are fantastic. The black and whites come very close to the quality of wet printing. The detail of the digital D3 files are great. Of course it would've been fun to shoot these shots with a 40K Hassleblad, but for my purposes, the D3 packs a lot of wallop for 5K. It will be interesting to see what the D4 will be able to do.

Over the past year I've been shooting black and white film too. Some shots are with vintage Nikon F, Rolleiflex TLR, Leicas, Fuji 690, and more. I process the film by hand and scan with my Nikon Super Coolscan 9000 scanner.
