I think it's because of the rarity of this kind of lens, but it's just a guess. I don't know how much they've cost new. It's maybe because it was a great focal length for portraits. But don't forget theses lenses were designed for FF. On the NEX, my MC ROKKOR-PG has the same framing as my 18-55 kit lens at 55, which means 55x1.5 = 82.5 Full Frame equivalent... So, you don't need a 85
