Canon S95 vs Panasonic LX5
Apr 25, 2011

Hello everyone,

Tired of either carrying my too large dSLR of incapable P&S camera, I am looking for the best 'enthusiast compact camera' as my 'always nearby' one.

To get some structure in all information and thoughts, i decided to write them down here. I would appreciate if you bear with me and perhaps share your thoughts and suggestions while i ramble along

From several reviews (like this one: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/q42010highendcompactgroup/ and other resources like http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/PS95/PS95A.HTM and http://www.steves-digicams.com/camera-reviews/canon/powershot-s95/steves-conclusion-96.html and http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/LX5/LX5A.HTM )

In conclusion, i narrowed it down to the Canon S95 and Panasonic LX5 .

Before I make the pros and cons list, let me get the most important function of the camera clear to myself and to you, dear readers

The camera that i choose should at least be better than the other at indoor photography and making pictures of (moving) kids ... since i do realise both are of simular quality and each choice will prove to be a compromise what so ever.

s95
+ Smallest of the two
+ Fastest of the two (though Imaging Resource called it sluggish?!)
+ Best JPG engine of the two (i don't shoot RAW)

+ Best Low light / high ISO performance of the two (though Imaging Resource only mentioned the apparantly good low-light performance of the Pana. LX5).

  • High contrast fringing

LX5
+ Best Battery life
+ Fastest lens: F2.0-3.3
+ Holds better because of bigger size and grip
+ More features/ more controle
+ More useful videomode

  • only 3 frame buffer in continious shooting

Undecided if it is pro or con:
s95 28-105mm so little more zoom
LX5: 24-90mm so wider

So perhaps you could share your opinion or experiences with one of the two cameras with me? I would very much appreciate that, in any case thanks for reading
