Why does focusing on a DSLR have to be so much more difficult than a point and shoot?

Actually, it's not. In fact one big advantage of the Dslr for moving targets is the lack of the serious shutter lag that affects most p&S cameras.

You probably just have the camera set up wrong for your style of shooting. You can get hosed by some of the options if you use them in the wrong situations.
