balloon camera & auto shutter solutions?
Apr 21, 2011

Hi there,

I work at a biological research station. We're looking to get low-level aerial photos of some seasonal ponds and then use image analysis software to quantify how much of the pond has been disturbed by non-native hogs.

Our tentative plan is to rig up a point-and-shoot camera to a medium-sized helium balloon with folks holding attached ropes/string to stabilize and retrieve it. Any ideas on how we can trigger the shutter once it's up? It will take too long to use the self-timer, certainly, and I don't think a remote shutter (if the camera we pick even supports one) would work at 100-200 feet up.

I've read a bit about open-source software that can be loaded onto cameras by way of the memory card, that might allow continuous firing of the shutter for a couple minutes (i.e., from launch to retrieval). Obviously, still in the planning phase!
Thanks, all!
