macro lens

Hi there, I have a canon 450D and I would like to start doing some proper macro photography. At the moment I have 2 pair of lenses, 28-300mm and 18-55mm, but they are not really that great for macro.
What I have in mind is mainly insects, plants, very small objects (dewdrops, spider webs etc) and I was wondering which lenses might suit this best. Ideally I wouldn't want to get too close to the subject (for several reasons like problems with light, possibility to "scare" the subject etc) but at the same time I would like to get really good close ups (not necessarily to this point http://photograview.com/2008/08/04/thomas-opo-shahan-interview/damselfly/ even if that is something I might consider in the future).
Somebody advised me to get a 90mm macro lenses, as opposed to 50mm so that I can be further from the subject, what do you guys suggest?
thanks
