The main reason you're buying 1.8 lens is to use it around f/1.8 or f/2 range. Sure you can say that faster (usually more expensive lens) has better image quality and construction, but if you stop it down to f/8 - f/16 most of the time, I doubt the difference is really worth the money.

By the way, a fast f/1.8 lens shot at f/22 will have the same speed as slow lens shot at f/22. I think you might have confused what a fast lens actually is. It allows you to shoot at faster speed (eg. f/1.8) which you usually can't do if you own slower lenses like f/4-f/5.6
