Flash for Macro
Apr 13, 2011

I finally have a Macro lens (100 2.8 L) and I realize that I will need a flash for many shots.

I have considered getting a ring flash, but AFAIK it is quite bulky and will further reduce the distance from the lens end to the subject. Without the lens hood the distance from lens tip to subject is a mere 13 cm at 1:1. This is already far closer than I would have liked (will get the 180 mm lens eventually, I suppose).

I have read that others use normal flashes for macro work - I even seem to remember one account of using two flashes on some V shaped device for proper lighting.

I would appreciate any tips you could give me on how best to light insects and other small critters. Is my best option a ring flash in the end?
