No exposure LOCK in videos on the 500 HS (100HS/300HS request)
Apr 11, 2011

Two new users of the Canon 500 HS wrote in to say that, unfortunately, this otherwise capable camera, has no exposure compensation lock in any of its video modes. When in stills mode, the AEL and AFL stay in place, but when you press the video record button, AEL goes away and the video gets recorded in “auto” brightness.

This makes this camera near useless for serious video (these Canon cameras have good-enough quality for art or music videos).

And what’s frustrated is this:

1. ALL other recent non-touchscreen Canon P&S cameras DO support exposure lock in video mode. Even the ones that cost just 90 bucks!

2. The manual for the camera is written in a way to make you think that you can lock exposure in video mode too.

Canon, this sucks! Make it right with a firmware update!

Can someone with the 100 HS or the 300 HS confirm that their models have exposure lock in video mode? After you lock exposure by leaving ON the exposure compensation screen while recording video, move the camera from a dark scene to a light one to see if brightness changes. If it doesn't, exposure is locked. If it does, then none of the new camera models support exposure lock in video mode (a feature that exists in all older ones). Please confirm! Thx!
