Canon EF-S 17-85 USM IS F/4-5.6 good for amateur?

I know there are some other choices, but I want to upgrade my 60D 'walkaround' lens from the 18-55 IS kit lens due to it's seemingly poor speed to focus. I'm kinda a rookie, and really pleased with my photos' quality, but this lens seems to hunt and hunt for focus.
Is the 17-85 USM a pretty good choice for me?
