HX9 versus Canon SX230?
Apr 6, 2011

Hello, I hesitate between the HX9 and the Canon SX230. The sony as more fun features but the SX230 seems to give better image quality. In several samples of the HX9, I often noticed some strange artifacts in some low contrasted areas as water, sand, grass...

Here is an example with first a crop from the HX9, and the second the same crop from the Canon SX230. (originals samples from http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/comparisons/2011-compact-gps-ultra-zoom-cameras/page-0,5#tabs-iso2 )

The HX9 crop shows some strange artifacts in the grass and the sand, and some losses of details in the sand.

No strange artifact with the SX230 and less losses of fine details in the sand. More accurate color too.

Is it possible to reduce these strange artifacts in manuals setting of the HX9? I think it's probably due to a too heavy post-sharpness process. Is it possible to reduce the sharpness process?
