Upgrading to FX - DX lenses?
Apr 5, 2011

I currently have a D200. My most used (and loved) lenses are the 17-55 f2.8 and the 85 f1.4g. I realize I'm rather late to the game here, but I have finally decided to upgrade to the D700, so I'm going from a DX to FX body. Obviously the 85 will still be brilliant on the 700, but I'm curious about the 17-55 which is a DX lens...

The D700 has an auto-crop feature that will allow DX lenses to be used, but what is the downside to that? Is there noticeable noise? Any clipping? Loss of clarity?

Bottom line, I'm trying to decide if I should sell my beloved 17-55 dx lens WITH my D200. If I do that, I will have to do a couple of jobs with the 85 before I can get an FX wide angle. If there is no issue other than crop, I can just keep the 17-55 and go on my merry way and sell/replace later. I hate the thought of being without a wide angle.

I would love any experience you may have going from DX to FX. Thanks!
