Monitor for permanent slideshow

My wife wants to buy a monitor for our living room to display photographs. I've got an older but working computer laying around and she was hoping to take the computer, buy a new monitor, and set up a permanent display in our living room.

I'm not sure the best, most cost effective way to accomplish this. She wants something reasonable large that will look good from a few feet to about ten feet away. Any suggestions on the best way to do this? Would a TV monitor be a better choice than a computer monitor?

Any general or specific suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
