Personally the optical compromise is too great at the long end. I'll stick with the 24-70 and 70-200VRII when I need a zoom although I mostly shoot primes.

Thanks, this would be paired with a 70-200VRII.

If Nikon would add VR to the existing 24-70mm f/2.8G then the decision would be a no-brainer.

Though I appreciate that the sensors in the current Nikon FF bodies allow you to just bump the ISO so that the 1/focal length rule of thumb applies.
