Canon 100-400 effective length

I'm going to the space shuttle launch and I want to take my camera. I'm renting a lens since mine is not the best in the world. I was considering the 100-400 since it's not only a zoom, but Canon's longest zoom. I think I'll be about 1-2 miles from the shuttle at dusk. Will this lens, on my 50D, "reach" or do I need something insane like an 800mm? Also, does anybody know how the 100-400 with 1.4 mk III teleconverter does both IQ wise and for auto focus? I don't the lens' overall speed will be a problem since I plan on stopping it down anyway, probably to f8. Thanks.
