Alternative to Hoodman HoodLoupe

I have problems seeing my LCD monitor. I would love to have a HoodLoupe but it's just out of my price range at this point. Does anyone know of any less-expensive devices, or even DIY? I took an empty toilet paper roll and covered it inside and out with black tape and it sorta works but...
(If this isn't the right forum, please direct me!)
