Focusing on Focusing (X100)

According to posts elsewhere on DPR, the X100 has a "fly-by-wire" focusing system, which as I understand it, means that it's akin to the zoom on my Olympus 5050, which only functions in specified increments via a push-pull lever. IOW, infinite zooming on my 5050 is not possible. Zooming is possible only via specified preset stopping zoom points programmed into the camera by Olympus. I have found this aspect of operating the camera very unsatisfying at times, as one would imagine. With regard to the X100's focusing, does fly-by-wire mean that the focusing ring on the barrel of the lens is only adjustable in specified increments? This does not seem logical. Can any new X100 owners clarify this point.
Thanks in advance.
