So why do you have a photo site?

I saw a post recently from Phil Zucker where he went through the steps to move a huge number of shots from one site to another and wondered why different people have photo sites and why so many shots on display?

Obviously some have them for commercial reasons and others have them for showing family and friends and others use some sort of gallery so they can post them to places like here but it does seem to me that having a huge number on a site is a bit counter productive.

I used to put a few shots up on Flickr but see no reason for that now so closed it down.

What reason do you have for having a huge collection online?
