Using XZ-1 with External Monitor
Mar 10, 2011

This is a rather specialized application, but it's what I do. One of the features I like about the XZ-1 is its ability to use an external monitor in the active mode. The Panasonic LX3/LX5 cannot do this. They only output video in the playback mode. The ability to use an external monitor comes in handy in digiscoping, astrophotography, microscope photography, and surveillance. The video image is shunted out to the external monitor, and the LCD on the xz-1 is rendered blank. Hence in longer exposures, there is less heat build-up, and hence less thernal noise from a heated up CCD. In astronomy, the camera might be pointed up near zenith, and one can't see the LCD of the xz-1 without terrible back strain. Using the external monitor eliminates that. Here I show the XZ-1 with Video out hooked to video-in of a Marshall VLCD-4 Pro monitor. But any size monitor can be used with a Video-in plug.
