RAW & Picture Controls - Clarification Required
Mar 8, 2011

People,

Just beginning to experiment with raw files and would like some clarification on the relationship between raw files and in camera Picture Controls.

Assume the "Standard" Picture Control is selected in camera with adjusted Sharpening 6 and Contrast 1 for example. (Default Sharpening 3, Contrast 0)

My current understanding is that the raw file will be captured with the Standard picture control at default levels. The adjusted sharpening and contrast levels would only be applied to a jpeg file if I was also shooting jpeg. Is this correct?

I also notice that the resulting raw file in ViewNX2 records the adjusted sharpening and contrast values as data from the Standard picture control. If I then do a straight jpeg conversion of the raw file are these adjusted values for sharpening and contrast automatically applied to the resultant jpeg file?

I look forward to your replies.

GT
