100-400mm L or 70-200 2.8L with 2x tele-converter

I have a 1D MK IV and when I was taking photos of wildlife, I would use the Canon 100-400mm. My wife asked to borrow it and take a guess what happened. She loved it so much, that she always uses it for wildlife. She felt bad and said I could purchase another L series lens. A couple of quick questions:

1. Instead of purchasing another 100-400mm, I have a 70-200 2.8 L and a 2x teleconverter. With the understanding I would lose two stops, would you go that route or just purchase another 100-400 so we can shoot at the same time?

2. Is there another lens anyone could recommend for birding and works well with the 1D. My wife agreed to a budget of $2000 U.S., (a little flexible on the budget, but not too much)

Thank you in advance for your input.
