x100: disappointing jpeg dynamic range?
Mar 7, 2011

Well, we have seen many JPG samples from x100. As far as I can tell, lens are sharp, high ISO noise is low, OVF/EVF is great. But.....

JPG Dynamic range looks terrible. Too many highlight blowouts for me. I will not be surprised if this is a camera made by other manufactures. However, fuji is known to have best DR performance.

Seems that DR 100% of X100 has much narrower DR than my fuji s200exr with 400% DR setting. Well, you could use 400% DR on x100, but that requires you ISO 800, doesn't it? (although I admit ISO800 of X100 delivers better image quality than my cheap s200 at ISO100)

I remember FUJI claims that EXR sensor will not be used for APS-C sensors, since APS-C already contains enough information and EXR design will be redundant. But the truth is : the default DR of this APS-C cmos isn't as good as the tiny EXR sensor on my s200.

Achieving 400% DR at ISO800 doesn't sound awesome for me. Maybe Fuji could try multi-frame technology based DR enhancement used by SONY and Ricoh, or they'd better use an EXR sensor on their X200...
