Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II Low light

Anyone who has used this new lens does it do any better at focusing and picture quality specifically in low light.

I am looking to us it inside for stage performances and high school band concerts.

I have seen sports shoots which are in poorly lit gyms but I believe that is better light than I will have.
