HDR where's the good stuff

I keep seeing what I think are poor examples of HDR imaging. Some of these are well composed but they have been overprocessed or suffer from poor exposures. I thought the basic premise behind HDR was to add a little more dynamic range to photos to compensate for a camera sensors gross inability to replicate what the human eye can see.

Can anyone point me at some good work or at least well respected work so I can see what is being achieved at the cutting edge in this field.
