Help: Lighting small groups for wedding
Mar 3, 2011

I am a beginner who shoots mainly portraits outside. A friend asked me to shoot her wedding and I am scrambling to figure it out by the end of this month. Currently I have the following.

Camera/Lens:
Nikon D90
50mm 1.8
35mm 1.8
Nikon D80 (borrowed)
Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR1 (borrowed)
Nikon wide angle 2.8 zoom (undetermined)

Lighting
SB-600
Wescott 42' shoot through umbrella
8.5' light stand with umbrella bracket

The wedding is average size with groups of up to 12. I am familiar with commander mode and off camera flash so I was considering a SB-900, Wescott 60" convertible umbrella and larger light stand. Also I could use the SB-900 on the D90 with the 70-200mm. Or just another set of what I have now (SB-600 w/42"). I have considered an AlienBee but with most of my other shoots outside, portability becomes a concern. So my questions are:

1. What additional lighting would you purchase with a loose budget of $500?

2. How would you place these lights for the best results?

Thank you!
