40D or 5D2 for whale watching?
Mar 1, 2011

I'm going on a whale watching trip and not sure which camera body would serve me better – 40D or 5DII. Lens will be 70-300IS (non-L).

The 40D has a crop factor and a higher frame rate, both of which would be helpful for whales. The 5DII generally has better image quality. I understand that the 5DII has the same pixel density as the 40D, which I think means a cropped image from the 5DII will have the same number of pixels as the 40D. Both cameras have similar focusing characteristics.

Any thoughts on which camera would get me better whale pictures?

p.s. – I searched the forum and saw the great whale pictures that some of you took with 7Ds and 100-400Ls. Unfortunately, budget and travel constraints prevent me from buying or renting new hardware.
