D90 has my eye

I've read quite a few posts here disparaging the 3yo D90 as outdated, with some even opining that photography these days is about chasing the latest technology. Other posters suggest the D90 was an excellent DLSR and remains so.

It's a little confusing for the relative noob such as I myself. Are there some good reasons not to start off with a D90 at this point? It seems -- to my inexperienced eye -- to be a quality tool: still better than the newer D3100 and although perhaps not in the same class as the D7000, substantially cheaper to make it worthwhile alternative.

I certainly don't want to throw my money away; am I on the wrong track?
