What lighting do i REALLY need for still life shots?...
Feb 24, 2011

I don't have much opportunity for getting out an about having a 3 year old at home and working almost full time.....

so.. i thought I'd try and turn my attention to doing what photography I can at home. Maybe some still life stuff - flowers, toys, food etc...

Question is, what will I need as a GOOD minimum of lighting set up? I've tried taking some shots on my kitchen table but the lighting always looks very amateur (either very harsh/blown or dull and lifeless, and I can't quite get the balance).

I have a Nikon D90 & SB-900 flash, so quite decent kit I believe, but don't know if I just need to practice more with what I have, or if I need to invest in a whole load of lighting stands, softboxes, external lighting, backdrops etc...

I'm on quite a tight budget so don't want to go spending a whole lot of cash on unneccessary lighting set up but at the same time, if my efforts are going to be pap by not having the right kit, it's a waste of time and I'll get very frustrated!

Can anyone give me a bit of a home-studio-setup-101 on what I NEED, and then I can build up with what I WANT later....once I get some experience?
