Nikon 24-85 2.8-4 and D700 - how is it?

May be this question was asked a lot. But...
How is this combination?

Looking at possibility buying this lens as walk-around one. Still not sure if I need it because have 3 primes...
Rented 24-70 for trip... Was happy with the convenience and result..
I know that 24-85 is a different league..
