E-5 "Natural" and "Portrait" Mode Comparison (img)
Feb 13, 2011

I was testing my portrait lighting set up that I will be using for a corporate conference this coming week, and decided to do a test comparison (self portrait) to see what the difference is between the 'Natural' Picture Mode and the 'Portrait' Picture Mode -- the results were very interesting to me.

What I learned was that the 'Portrait' Mode reduces contrast by slightly lifting shadow areas, which has the effect of softening the detail very slightly -- but not too much. It also warms the image slightly which improves skin tones by decreasing the red hue. Overall, the effect is very well done and I have decided to use the 'Portrait' Mode rather than 'Natural' for the board and staff portraits I will be shooting next week.

Below is a side by side comparison crop (Not a 100% crop, since I didn't want to scare anyone!). The 'Natural' Mode image is on the left, and the 'Portrait' Mode image is on the right.

God Bless,
Greg
