I don't know exactly what causes a flare to show up as red dots, maybe its somehow light reflecting off an internal element back onto the lens...who knows..

One thing I can say for sure is that it's not limited to a certain camera, or even a certain brand. I had similar results with my old iPhone 3g:

The pinkish spots match the color of the sensor when you look at it:

so I'm assuming there is a part inside the body that is just too shiny, or maybe even the coating of the sensor itself, relfecting back inside the lens when the light hits it just right.

Probably not much that can be done about it, short of opening up the body and looking for the shiny piece! Maybe a brave soul can solve the issue with a bit of matte black paint...
