Rokinon 85mmF1.4 on E5 for theatre performance
Feb 5, 2011

The great Zuiko F2.0 lenses (ZD35-100 zoom and ZD150 and ZD50 primes are the ones I have) are of course wonderful for photographing low light situations where flash is not allowed, such as a concert or theatre performance. But they are expensive and also a bit bulky, so they attract much attention.

There are other solutions : cheaper and more inconspicuous, if you don't mind the operations of a manual lens. There is a quality difference but it is not prohibitive.

Earlier this week I photographed my daughter participating in a school performance by the Academy of Music and Word. It was a mix of low-budget theatre and spoken word (mostly comical poetry recitation).

For this shoot I was confined to a single vantage point (my place in the audience), where I knew I could hardly use the ZD35-100mm zoom. So I shot everything from the exact same position, with the much smaller Rokinon 85mmF1.4 lens on E5.

I believe it shows that it is possible to shoot low light theatre performances adequately and on the cheap with an all manual lens. And not just with the E5, but with any Oly camera (ISO stayed mostly well below the 800 mark).

I'll share some more pictures in the first reply.
