dpreview, please understand 35mm equivalence
Feb 3, 2011

We still have a situtation that despite this being one of the definitive sites for data on cameras, the key information is not presented directly.

We have 35mm equivalent focal lengths, but 35mm equivalent apertures are not given, and must be calculated with special effort by the reader. Even the crop factor is not given, but must often be looked up.

We even have basic errors like:
(from http://www.dpreview.com/previews/fujifilmx100/ )
Lens* (35mm equiv)
Fujifilm FinePix X100 35mm, F2

As if a compact camera had an 35mm F2-equivalent lens. The idea of making one number equivalent but not the other is just crazy.

On the basic data of compact camera specs there should be equivalent aperture as well as equivalent focal length. At the moment there isn't even crop factor to work these things out. Yes, there should also be actual aperture and focal length, to keep photographers happy who have rules of thumb based on these numbers.

On reading the basic data for a camera, the reader should be able to know: framing (same information as equivalent focal length), light intake, depth of field. I don't care what information is given but there should be a system for easily assessing these things. Equivalent focal length/depth of field are just two numbers that do that.
