Needed? Depends. Wanted? By me, definitely.

IS is not ever really needed by anyone, but a lot of people might want it. Yes, higher ISO's certainly lessen the usefulness of IS for merely getting a sharp photo of a static subject at low shutter speeds, but, even so, having the option of the 4 f/stop gain in useful shutter speed will always be better than not having it, at whatever ISO your using.

Furthermore, for specialists like me who already have IS versions of longer zooms (70-200 f/2.8 IS II in my kit) and primes, IS serves other not-so-obvious purposes that are not at all effected by high ISO quality; for panning moving objects, like cars, runners and bikes moving across your line of vision, the best version of IS is truly a great tool to show exagerrated horizontal motion while limiting vertical camera motion at the necessary slow shutter speeds required when making a good panning shot. And the focal length range and maximum aperture of the 24-70 are both otherwise excellent for shooting the closer-up varieties of action panning images. So, this would make a 24-70 f/2.8 IS II a lens I'd love to have in my bag.

I hope Canon hears me and others who have been patiently waiting for them to "get it." Bring on the IS version already!

Regards,
David
